The Caim
The Caim* is set on 2.5 acres of land in the Luthermuir area of Aberdeenshire and centres around rhythms of nature, the land and faith. We’re offering accessible pathways into wild & locally-grown food – for our own health, the health of our communities and the health of the planet.
We seek to:
– grow a wide range of fresh local, seasonal produce of vegetables and fruit. Sharing produce via larders and to others who can give as they are able.
-Give opportunities for ‘meaningful gardening activity’, to listen to people and to build relationships across the communities.
-Offer a different expression of the Christian way rooted on the land and an expression of Celtic presence and rhythms.
*[‘Caim‘ is Scots Gaelic word and it has to do with ‘encircling‘, ‘protection’ or ‘sanctuary’; the root word meaning ‘circle’, to bend, or turn.]

A passion for Growing
The Caim field continues to develop. We have 2 orchard areas, a large and a small polytunnel, a vegetable growing area. In development are a soft fruit area, willow beds and a labyrinth, Importantly, we seek to be in sympathy with the environment and are setting up nest boxes and will be exploring developing our quiet ‘cloister’ area.
Vegetable Beds
We have some 40 beds 10×1.2M. Adequate for growing plenty vegetables. The polytunnels help with bringing on seedlings and we grow varieties of tomatoes in the polytunnel, which also helps extend the season too.
Orchard 1
This was our first area planted with a range of varieties.See here for more
Orchard 2
Thanks to further funding we were able to develop a second orchard with more varieties.
Soft fruit
We are currently working on the ground to prepare the area with posts, etc for soft fruit.
Willow project
We are trialing 10 varieties of willow in 2025.
The Cloister
An area to simply sit and be. Away form the garden activities.
Funding
The local Howe o’ the Mearns Parish set things in motion and continues to contribute. We have been encouraged by both large and small financial donations, as well as donations of plants, seeds, tools,
and people’s generous time.
